At the beginning of this year Gildan launched the Performance Adult Tech Hooded Sweatshirt (99500), a classic fit hoodie made from a 237gsm, 100% polyester fabric. The sweatshirt has been garnering positive feedback from customers, reports merchandising manager Summer Scott-Samuel, and sales have continued to increase throughout the year.
A lot of research was carried out when designing this new style, explains Summer: “We worked with some of our key distributors and conducted our own market assessment of the opportunity for a pullover hooded sweatshirt made from a technical fabric. We found that there weren’t many competitors offering this type of fabrication at a value price. Our goal was to introduce to the wholesale market a great design, fabric and fit at a competitive price.”
The team also looked at the high street for inspiration: “Looking at retail brands is always an instrumental part of our design and development process, coupled with the creativity of our in-house development team,” Summer added.

The fabric is the standout feature of the style, and is what sets it apart from the others on the market. “We wanted a fabric that is difffffferent from what the competition offffffers,” comments Summer. “This fabric was chosen because the hand is supple, feels good on, has excellent stretch and recovery, and is at least as good as similar products you would find in the retail market, if not better. We wanted the end-user to feel like it’s more than a value product when wearing it.
What’s more, the fabric provides warmth without the weight. When you wear it you would never think it’s 237gsm.”
At the moment the sweatshirt is available in three strongselling core colours – black, charcoal and sport dark navy – along with the popular safety green shade; more colours will be added in future seasons. It comes in sizes S-3XL.
Created with decorators very much in mind, the Performance Adult Tech Hooded Sweatshirt has a three-piece hood featuring a 7.6cm centre panel that has been designed especially for logo placement. The hoodie can be decorated using a wide number of methods, including screen printing, embroidery, appliqué, direct-to-garment and even sublimation on lighter colours. “We see this hoodie as ideal for sports teams, or as a modern alternative to your classic 50% cotton/50% polyester hood,” explains Summer. As for the future, Summer isn’t giving anything away. “We are considering what’s next for this product range and are carefully considering the options. Stay tuned!”
